My Process:
1. From about September 2019 to April 2020, I filled about a notebook and a half with journal entries. I planned to use these to create petals for the hydrangeas
2. It all started with a sketch. I had a mini epiphany in the back of class one day and just had to get this idea down.
3. I began painting sheets of card stock with various shades of watercolor, trying to mimic the shades of hydrangeas. Being able to paint outside was very relaxing!
4. I transcribed all of the journal entries on to the painted card stock. I chose to write like this as opposed to writing on individual petals to maintain the sentiment and create something beautiful with words, but also keep some privacy
5. After I started cutting out some petals, I assembled a rough protoype of what I wanted to flowers to look like
6. While cutting out nearly 250 flower petals, I created a survey to collect a variety of perspectives on grief. I aimed to use this data to create an interactive piece to the project stemming beyond my own experiences.
7. After cutting out everything, I attached wire stems to each petal to make it easier to form the hydrangea flowers
8. After everything dried, I twisted 8 to 10 wires together to create each hydrangea flower, making about 25 in total.
9. After finishing the flowers, I painted a grayscale canvas background to contrast the bright colors of the flowers.
10. Finally, I used the survey responses to create a WordBubble shaped like I leaf. I painted stems and cut them out so they could be incorporated into the flowers
11. After gathering all the pieces, I had some help with the final assembly and combining all of the elements.
